broadcast gradient

notes

25 radios are arranged in a grid, roughly divided in half, with each half assigned to one of two broadcast sources:

  1. a buddhist “prayer machine” redistributed via an FM Radio Transmitter
  2. a mistuned classical music station (KUSC)

Sources are most concentrated in two opposing corners, intermingling “evenly” as one approaches the center. Each radio drifts in and out of phase as it interferes with its neighbor, resulting in an ebb and flow of broadcast waves, a kind of broadcast-source gradient.

Exhibited at CalArts September 2015.
